In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s SUMMER and isn’t it hot? It’s hot. HOT. HOOOOTTTTTTT. Hot.
Obvious weather reporting aside, Summer also heralds DC Thomson’s Summer Specials, with new editions from both The Beano AND The Dandy!
Yes, while The Dandy shuffled off this mortal coil back in 2012, the Summer Special still goes strong year after year, helping to make those hot hot HOT days a little bit cooler.
This year’s special appears to largely be a celebration of The Dandy in its final couple of years, featuring as it does a host of strips from the comic’s experimental and ludicrously fun final revamp from 2010-2012. As such, you’ll find Jamie Smart’s Desperate Dan inside, Phil Corbett’s Korky the Cat and Nigel Auchterlounie’s Corporal Clott, among others. Furthermore, there’s also no less than SEVEN pages of George vs Dragon action inside, including a whole BRAND NEW puzzle page I drew for it. HOORAY!
It’s an absolute thrill and honour to have George vs Dragon so well represented in this collection, alongside the other more classic and well-known characters. George vs Dragon was the first strip I had commissioned in my professional career back in 2010, and it’s genuinely pleasing to see them still lasting. And this won’t be the last you see of them this year either, for they are also returning in FOUR new strips in this year’s Dandy Annual! HOORAY FOR THEM!
If you were one of those fools who let the last revamp of The Dandy pass you by when it happened, then the Summer Special represents a great opportunity to sample some of the mad, anarchic delights that came out of that period. Go on, treat yourself – it’s the holidays, after all.
Plus it’s hot.
